about

Classically trained and apprenticed as well as independently self-disciplined, Kendra Lockhart has been professionally creating fine jewelry for 14 years. She is a multimedia artist who went to the University of Illinois (Champaign) for Art History and Studio Arts, then G.I.A. for Gemology. Gemenis Masterworks was officially formed in 1998.

Her love for precious adornments is the natural evolution of performing contemporary ballet in her youth, then leaving home to study Architecture. Those passions eventually became free play plus structure in her favorite elements, metal and stone.

What are your strengths as an artist?
Individuality, versatility, imagination. Being fluent verbally and artistically. Seeing the mystique of storytelling through a creative process. You become a part of the piece, that becomes part of the client, who tells its story and on and on... that's addictive.

What separates you from the others?
The all-around artisan factor of being interpreter, wax carver, goldsmith, stone setter and appraiser. I have an overview of the project that just designing wouldn't allow. The integrity of the client's wish stays intact.

What are you most proud of?
I have a portfolio full of works I thought were bigger than me at the time. It's rewarding to surprise yourself when raising the bar. Metamorphosis is a never-ending source of growth for me. I enjoy evolving my art and business through both success and missteps.

How would you describe your approach?
Unlimited. I am grateful to have work and play be the same element: magic. What's timeless and beautiful for me in the process becomes that as the piece for the wearer. Aside from that, I believe the work should have a life to it that is equally sophisticated in concept as execution.
